New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday to demand financial package for the state. Mamata has been demanding a package from the Centre claiming she inherited a treasury which was in shambles from the previous left-ruled government. The National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC) matter may also be discussed. This meeting comes barely days after the Trinamool Congress chief wrote to the Prime Minister opposing the anti-terror body, claiming it would undermine the federal structure.
Mamata had opposed the NCTC claiming that it usurped the powers of states.
NCTC is Home Minister P Chidambaram's pet project, and comes into effect from the beginning of the next month. However, with the allies not willing, the government may have to go for further consultations, especially as Parliament meets for the Budget session in March, and the UPA would surely want to avoid a Lokpal-like impasse on the floor of the House.
