Puducherry: Three more Puducherry legislators, comprising two independents and a Congress MLA, resigned from their membership in the Assembly here on Thursday, taking the number of resignations to eight in the past month alone. N Anandhu (Congress), A Elumalai and A Marimuthu (Independents) submitted the letters of resignation addressed to the Speaker to the Secretary of the Assembly M Sivaprakasam.
Anandhu told PTI that he had joined the former Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy-led AINRC after he quit from the primary membership of the Congress. Anandhu said he had resigned from the Congress because the Uppalam constituency he had aspired to contest had been earmarked by his party to the DMK. Anandhu was elected to the Assembly in 2006 from Bussy segment as a nominee of the now
defunct Puducherry Munnetra Congress.
Elumalai, who represented Oussudu reserved segment as an Independent, resigned from the Assembly as he had been finalised as the nominee of the DMK for the same segment in the April 13 Assembly polls here.
The strategy of Marimuthu, elected from Neduncadu reserved constituency in Karaikal in 2006, could not be known immediately.
The strength of the 33 member Assembly (30 elected and three nominated members) has now dropped to 25 after resignations by eight members in about the past month, the majority of whom have joined AINRC.
With Anandhu's resignation, the strength of the elected members of the Congress has come down from 13 to 10 as Rangasamy and his confidante P Angalane had quit as MLAs on January 20.
