While many of us believe that it's only service providers and their poor infrastructure that lead to call drops, there is actually more to it. At times, it could be a hardware issue in your phone or a user's fault that lead to poor reception or no connection. To help you understand what could be the possible causes behind call drops, we have listed below five key reasons:
1. Operators have cited lack of spectrum and residents protesting installation of mobile towers as reasons for call drops. According to COAI director general Rajan S Mathews, the lack of spectrum is the main reason for call drops. Hurdles posed by local government bodies to installing mobile towers citing radiation issues is another reason. "Unless these issues are addressed, it will be difficult to resolve these problems," said Mathews. More spectrum and more mobile towers is the ideal combination.
2. It is believed that call drops in India are also because of signal levels that are actually lower when compared to international standards. "India has adopted a standard, which is one-tenth of international standard of radiation", says RK Arnold, member, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). In India, the specified limit of radiation is one-tenth the global norms, while 90 per cent of the countries follow the international limit.
3. Your cell phone itself could be a cause of call drops. If your phone has a defective or damaged antenna, you may experience poor reception and frequent call drops.
4. Call drops is also common in areas even where there is proper coverage from cell towers. Let's put it this way. Many of us are even unable to properly connect to the network in daily environments such as office or home. It so happens because of materials like reinforced concrete and wire mesh used in the construction of the building. Cell phone signals, therefore, cannot easily pass through the walls of such buildings - leading to weak signals or connection loss.
5. The low battery on your phone can also be a reason of call drops. This is because the transmitter in your phone requires a certain amount of power supply to maintain a stable connection during calls. So, if your phone is running low on battery, chances of call drops increase.
