The experimental Project Ara aims at providing users with smartphones in which they can swap critical components and replace or upgrade them as per their requirements.

New Delhi: For those who have been waiting forward to have a customisable mobile device, Google is likely to make their wish come true at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 in Barcelona by unveiling its modular phones.

Toshiba, one of the third party companies working on modules, has developed a 5-megapixel camera module for Google project-Ara Spiral 2. This camera on Google phones will be contained within a swappable module, which would allow users the flexibility to upgrade their camera by simply replacing the existing one.

Speculations are rife that about 50 modular components could be displayed at the Barcelona event along with a working version of the modular handset on show.

The experimental Project Ara aims at providing users with smartphones in which they can swap critical components and replace or upgrade them as per their requirements.

It is estimated that the modules will range from $50 to $500 and will be adjusted to make them 'reasonable' to users.
