New Delhi: Samsung has filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office for a docking apparatus that allows an Android smartphone or tablet to be turned into a Windows laptop.
After placing an Android phone in the docking apparatus, it would connect and automatically switch on a Windows mode. Users can control and view everything through the attached screen and keyboard.
A report on Mashable notes that in order for the apparatus to work, the smartphone would need to run both Android and Windows. There is also a possibility of a trackpad being added, along with an option for other OS to be used with the docking station in the future.
While the popularity of Windows Phone remains limited, there are more takers for the desktop or laptop version of the ubiquitous operating system by Microsoft. Samsung’s patent would save users the task of carrying two devices and offer a decent big screen experience by just having to plug the docking system into the smartphone.
Samsung’s patent doesn’t indicate that the said technology would see the light of the day, because any patent is a mere idea which may or may not lead to its fruition. For those having hopes to be able to convert their Android or iOS smartphones into Windows laptops will have to hold their breaths for now.
