A disturbing incident occurred in Bengaluru when an Uber bike rider and his passenger, who had arranged a trip using an app, were seen to be harassed by local autorickshaw drivers. The video went viral and brought attention to the unsettling pattern of harassing customers who choose to take app-based transportation. The user posted a video on July 25, depicting Bengaluru autorickshaw drivers scolding the passenger, grabbing his backpack and insisting that he cancel his ride. According to the user’s caption for the video, the event happened close to the Indiranagar Metro station.

The user in the video can be heard saying, “why are you harassing this person? Let me go, if people want to take an Uber, they will take Uber; if people want to take an auto, they will take an auto; if you want to go to the police station, it’s right here.”

Threats and mistreatment are seen directed against the Uber bike driver and his customer in the video. A few local autorickshaw drivers persisted in demanding that he cancel the ride, and one of them even tried to smack the person who recorded the video. The video stopped abruptly when someone hit his camera.

The user voiced his concerns in the post that followed, saying that these riders experience this on a daily basis. He called for “strict action” to be carried out against the harassing of riders and passengers who use Uber or any other form of transportation apart from bystanders.

The user, who tagged Indiranagar Police, asked that more traffic cops be stationed close to the metro station. “Autowalas are acting like the boss of the streets,” he claimed.

The user was swiftly contacted by authorities, who requested that he get in touch with them right away.

In an update to the situation, the user mentioned that he filed a report against the persons at Indiranagar police station. The police allegedly told him they would make a formal complaint and asked him to return to the station and the spot for verification.

“I hope something positive happens out of this,” he wrote.

The tweet also drew the attention of Uber India Support, who stated that such behaviour is “unacceptable.” They requested that the user send a direct message with the details of his journey so that the company’s safety team could get in touch with him.

The incident prompted a social media discourse with users urging the authorities to take necessary action against the perpetrators.
