There are very few videos and footage available from North Korea and whenever something from the nation surfaces online, it often takes the internet by storm. Be it a regular day, bizarre regulations, horrifying news events or even travel vlogs, the secrecy of the country has contributed towards the global curiosity surrounding it. We have now stumbled upon one such video. A recent viral clip depicting the eerie atmosphere of North Korea’s subway system has sparked comparisons to scenes straight out of horror movies, leaving internet users intrigued and unsettled.
Shared by a traveller Jesse Romberg, who documented his experiences within the reclusive country, the footage quickly gained traction online, drawing attention to the chilling ambience of the Pyongyang subway station.
The video, initially posted on Instagram, captured attention with its haunting music, foreboding doors, and the blank expressions of commuters, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a suspenseful thriller. Romberg’s note describing the experience as akin to a journey back in time only added to the intrigue surrounding the footage.
“From Pyongyang, North Korea. This will be the most eerie thing you will see today. There are times while exploring the streets of North Korea that it will feel like you have gone back in time. This is absolutely one of those moments. The music, the darkness, the guillotine of the door, and the overall vibe of this train was not something I had ever experienced before. There are many things to ponder about this video,” reads the caption.

The social media users wasted no time sharing their reactions, with many likening the scenes to those found in horror films. A commenter said, “Looks like a horror movie set,” while another speculated about the music’s message, saying, “The music is probably saying, ‘All hail our great leader Kim. Everything in this country is wonderful. Tell your friends.'”
An individual observed, “That door seems to have a personal grudge,” highlighting the eerie nature of the surroundings.
Additionally, there were speculations about the authenticity of the passengers, with one commenter suggesting, “When we went to Pyongyang, all of those people on the one subway line… were all paid actors (sort of extras like in a film).”
Despite the unease surrounding the video, it garnered significant attention online, amassing over 4.5 lakh views so far and sparking discussions about the mysterious and often oppressive realities of life in North Korea. As a commenter put it, “North Korea is the world’s largest open-air prison,” capturing the somber tone underlying the fascination with the secretive nation.
