A man punched a Spanish comedian in the face after he allegedly made an “offensive” and “sexualised” remarks regarding his three-month-old baby. On Monday night in the Spanish city of Alicante, Jaime Caravaca was midway through a monologue when an enraged parent stormed the stage and struck him with a very strong blow. Caravaca released a statement on the incident after the row.
Taking to Twitter, he said, “After what happened, what was intended to be a joke was ultimately an unfortunate and not at all appropriate comment on my part.” The comedian continued by apologising to anyone who was offended. “Let’s put violence aside, and leave a good world for people to grow free.”
The parent who punched the comedian has been identified by the New York Post as musician and right-wing activist Alberto Pugilato. Pugilato acknowledged the apology, adding, “I accept your apology, Jaime.”
Alberto continued by saying that he supports the right to defend oneself in the same manner as he supports the freedom of speech. Alberto continued, saying he had no malicious intentions against the comic. “Children are sacred. All the best.”
Pugilato was alluding to hard-left Caravaca’s social media statements rather than a joke the comic delivered on set.
The on-stage brawl broke out when Caravaca reacted to a photo of Pugilato’s baby son posted on X with the text, “Pride and joy.” According to a since-deleted post, Caravaca said there is no way to stop Pugilato’s son from being “gay” in the future and included other explicit remarks.
After Caravaca made comments about his three-month-old child, Pugilato replied that he would make him apologise and added, “You will discover that real life is not Twitter.”
Following his warning, Pugilato was captured on camera lunging onto the stage and striking Caravaca in the face. “Those paedophilic comments about my son… say them to my face… you piece of trash… now!” the man reportedly said, according to Marca, the Spanish newspaper.
In the aftermath of the incident, Pugilato expressed his concerns on MultiCanal Radio, stating that he was extremely worried and had never experienced such an “unpleasant” emotion.
According to the NY Post, police were called to the location, but the comedian chose not to report anything, therefore no arrests were made.
