While many Western travellers come to Mumbai’s Dharavi Chawl to witness the struggles of the poor, few know about Kusumpur Pahari, one of India’s poorest slums in New Delhi. To shed light on this overlooked community, YouTuber Chris chose to spend time with the locals. His goals for the video included “eating something, getting a house tour and supporting a local business." Throughout the video, Chris showed the difficult living conditions, claiming that they don’t even have fresh running water in the area. Although he initially felt nervous about visiting, all his fears disappeared when he met the friendly locals. Some even invited him into their homes for tea and made him feel like part of their family.
At the beginning of his tour, the content creator said, “This is India’s poorest slum Kusumpur Pahari, a place where children search trash hoping to find something valuable. We have a toilet, which is considered a luxury, where most people earn less than $20 a month and fight over water jugs because there is no running water that’s safe to drink. This is the first time that I’m actually really nervous. Locals describe it as living on a garbage dump and say that there’s infinite cockroaches everywhere."
During his initial moments in Kusumpur Pahari, Chris met several women who greeted and invited him in their home for tea. He noticed that despite their very limited resources, like the lack of clean water, they still offered him chai and cookies. The kindness didn’t end there, they also enjoyed some music together and the YouTuber even danced. The whole family came out to meet him, shook his hand and asked about his well-being. Chris was touched by their friendliness.
Chris later visits a barber shop to complete his final goal to support local businesses. After the shave, when he asked the barber about the cost, the barber said it was only Rs 50. However, Chris decided to give him Rs 500 instead, to show his appreciation for the barber’s hard work. Interestingly the barber goes a step further by offering him a ride outside the slum.
Reacting to the video, a user wrote, “Thanks for showing how generous the poorest can be."
Another shared, “This was great. Not sure how else to describe it."
“You did not visit the end of the village If you had gone further you would have seen the mountains and the cleanliness too," a comment read.
One more added, “Horrible conditions to live in. I feel for them."
Since Chris shared the video on YouTube, it has garnered over 7000 views.
