Zomato 'Celebrating' Employees Working on 31st Dec Has Internet Stressed Out: 'Nothing to Be Proud'
Zomato celebrating its employees working on 31st December in their so-called 'war room' leaves internet unhappy.

As the world bid adieu to 31st December 2023 with uproarious celebrations, the scene at Zomato was a stark departure from the global revelry. Amidst the hustle and bustle of keeping the food orders flowing and orchestrating backend operations in their illustriously named ‘war room,’ Zomato’s workforce painted a different picture. Founder Deepinder Goyal and colleagues opted to share snapshots from their work domain, showcasing employees giving up the customary holiday cheer to embrace work and revel in the unique culture of the grind. Unsurprisingly, the internet wasn’t clinking its virtual glasses to toast this unconventional celebration.

The spotlight shifted to accusations against the food delivery giant, with fingers pointed at their supposed ‘celebration’ of capitalism at the expense of work/life balance. One disgruntled user remarked, “Dear food delivery companies you’re not police, doctors or even army personnel so don’t sell the narrative to your engineers that them sacrificing their new year is betterment of society.”

Another chimed in with a comparative narrative, writing, “Zomato and Swiggy ( Indian food delivery startups ) setting up their war room. Expecting their peak day of the year. I’m working for UK based food delivery startup. We have been on holiday for the last 10 days. No peak. Everyone getting to enjoy the year end.”

Even Zomato’s generalist’s post decked out with a caption like, “It’s 31st Dec and yes, @zomato we are in office! All product, tech, supply teams primed for the sprint,” drew a barrage of negative comments. One critic asserted, “That’s not something to be proud of,” while another questioned the company’s ethos, stating, “I don’t think this is something to brag about, honestly makes me question the company and work culture.”

A third commenter went on, “Wow this is super toxic, I hope people would enjoy the day with their loved ones.”

Deepinder Goyal’s post, too, encountered its fair share of critiques. After all, for him, nothing says festive spirit like a ‘war zone’ of deadlines and spreadsheets.
