US President Joe Biden is on the verge of overtaking his rival and predecessor Donald Trump as the frontrunner in the race to become the next president of the US, according to bookmaker Betfair. Betfair, based on the bets it has received on who will win out in the election later this year, said Biden is on a level pegging with Donald Trump, indicating that the embattled Biden could win the polls.
The bookmaker, based on money bet on the contenders, said that both presidents are on an even footing for the first time in several months as Trump was the former frontrunner, leading Biden on several polls.
He was also the favourite on Betfair since September but his odds hit the shortest point last month after the US Supreme Court overturned a Colorado ruling that barred him from appearing on the presidential ballot in the state.
The Daily Mail, which accessed the Betfair data, said Biden is seeing a sudden boost in popularity and said if this trend continues then he will become odds-on favourite to defeat Trump come November.
“The US Election market is always volatile on Betfair Exchange, and while Donald Trump has dominated as the favourite for the past seven months, it looks as though the market is about to flip again, this time in favour of Joe Biden. Punters can barely separate the two, it’s neck and neck,” spokesperson Sam Rosbottom told the UK-based newspaper.
“Since the start of last month, Biden has been backed in from 11/5 to 11/8 and is level with Donald Trump whose odds have drifted out from an all-time low of 10/11 four weeks ago,” he further added.
But a recent New York Times/Siena College poll revealed that the majority of the 81-year-old president’s 2020 voters believe he is “too old to be effective” and another by the Wall Street Journal suggested Trump led the Democrat in six battleground states with leads ranging between 2-6%.
