Maldives has deported 43 Indians after accusing them of committing crimes, according to a report by Male-based news outlet Adhadhu. Maldives administration, as per the report, deported 186 foreigners from 12 nations but not a single person from China.
The highest number of people deported was from Bangladesh. At least 83 Bangladeshis were deported following by 43 Indians, 25 Sri Lankans and 8 Nepalis. The date of their deportation is not yet known.
The news of the deportation comes after the Maldivian home ministry said they have undertaken efforts to shut down businesses operating illegally in the country with earnings deposited to bank accounts held by foreigners. The Maldivian homeland security minister Ali Ihusan said his office is working with the finance ministry operating against ‘illegal businesses’ operating under various names. He said businesses operated by a foreigner instead of the registered owner also comes under the ambit of the so-called ‘illegal businesses’.
“After registering under another name, [they include] places that operate outside of the registry, especially with the involvement of a foreigner with Rufiyaa deposited to his personal account,” the minister was quoted as saying by Adhadhu.
He said that his ministry was working on shutting down such businesses and deporting the foreigners who operate them.
The Male-based news outlet said if the registrar believes that a business is operated by a foreigner earning profits either directly or indirectly such businesses will be terminated as per a law enacted in December 2021.
The Maldives immigration controller Shamaan Waheed said 186 foreigners committed crimes and have been deported from Maldives.
The Maldivian administration under newly-elected President Mohamed Muizzu has shifted towards China. China is keen to gain influence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Muizzu came to power promising that he will not let any other nation influence Maldivian foreign policy – referring to India without taking its name.
After taking over as president, he asked India to withdraw its troops stationed in Maldives. India agreed to replace its troops with civilians in Maldives after a round of discussions.
