A teenager from Oklahoma died earlier this month after being beaten by another female student inside her school’s bathroom. Dagny Benedict, 16, was involved at a fight at Owasso High School in suburban Tulsa on February 7, according to a report by The New York Post.
Benedict, a student with good grades, and her friend were battered for a long period of time by three older female students until a school staffer finally broke up the melee. When the family used female pronouns for her, mother Sue Benedict, told UK-based The Independent, that Benedict was non-binary and used the name Nex. The other victim was also non-binary.
She further added that Benedict was often bullied at school and died because she fell and hit her head during the bathroom melee. She also suffered bruising and cuts across her face as a result of the attack. “I didn’t know how bad it had gotten,” the mother said.
The other parent whose child was beaten said their daughter saw Benedict being attacked and the assailants “beating her head across the floor”. Benedict was injured to such an extent that she was unable to reach the nurse’s office.
They said that the school staffer failed to call the police or even an ambulance. Benedict’s relative called the police from the hospital to inform them of the brutal fight. She was released from the hospital but readmitted the next day, after which she died. “I think complications from brain trauma, head trauma, is what caused it,” the mother said. Local police said they are still determining the cause of death. They are also probing what led to the confrontation. It is unclear if Benedict’s attackers will face charges.
“She was tough, but a great kid. I loved Dagny so much,” her mother said at her funeral last week. The Owasso Public School District is yet to issue a statement and police are probing if there was another possible underlying medical condition which led to Benedict’s death.
