Mercedes has finally unveiled the much awaited GT R, the track-focused sibling of the Mercedes-AMG GT and the Mercedes-AMG GT S.
Being the flagship model in the AMG range, the GT R is the most technologically advanced model launched till date. The car, called as “The Beast from Green Hell" by the German automaker, spent most of its time in development stages at the Nurburgring, which is also called as the “Green Hell". If that’s not ‘Green’ enough for you then the “AMG Green Hell Magno" paintjob leaves no doubt about its origin.
The biggest visible difference in the car’s styling has to be the new front fascia with active elements, the large rear wing, double diffuser on the back, 10-spoke wheel design and the new AMG Panamericana grille with vertical fins that celebrated its world première on the Mercedes-AMG GT3 customer-sport racing car. In terms of electronics, the active rear-wheel steering, the nine-way adjustable traction control system and the adjustable coil-over suspension with additional electronic control have been added.
Under the ‘shark-nose’ hood of the Mercedes-AMG GT R, lies a massive 4.0 litre twin-turbocharged V8 motor that pushes out 585 horsepower (75 more than GT S) and 700 Nm of torque available between 1,900 and 5,500 rpm and comes connected to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. What all this power means, in simple words, is that the GT R can go from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and attain a top speed of 318 km/h.
Interestingly, despite the long hood, the engineers over at the German company have managed a rear-biased weight distribution of 47.3 to 52.7, which combined with everything else that the car has, should mean an impressive lap time around the Nurburgring, at least in theory.
Given that the car is being promoted as a track-focused car, that too the Nurburgring in particular, it will be interesting to see what kind of a lap time the GT R manages on the same track, as that will give a clearer picture as to where this offering stands as compared to the competition.
