A show cause notice has been issued to BJP MLA ST Somashekar by Karnataka BJP’s chief whip in regard to cross-voting for the Congress in the Rajya Sabha elections. The notice has also been issued to Shivram Hebbar, who did not participate in the voting process that was held on February 27.
The Grand Old Party won three Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka, however after Somashekar cross-voted for the Congress candidate Ajay Maken, the BJP managed to win only one seat. This came as a major blow to the saffron party in Karnakata.
According to an India Today report, the two leaders, Somashekar and Hebbar were seen getting closer to the Congress recently as they were reportedly upset with the party leadership.
Somashekar represents the Yashwantpur assembly constituency and Hebbar is in-charge of the Yellapur segment.
After the voting process was over, Somashekar told media that he voted according to his conscience. The rebel BJP leader said, “I voted based on my conscience and for those who have worked to build schools and carry out development projects in my constituency.”
Meanwhile, Congress’s Ajay Maken, Nasser Hussain, and GC Chandrashekar won the polls with 47, 47, and 45 votes, respectively. Om the other hand, BJP’s Narayanasa Bhandage was also elected to the Upper House.
The voting saw a turnout of 99.5 percent, with 222 out of a total of 223 voters exercising their franchise.
