14 security personnel were killed and seven others injured in an ambush by insurgents in Manipur on Saturday.

Imphal: At least 14 security personnel were killed and seven others injured in an ambush by insurgents in Manipur on Saturday. They were killed by suspected militants at Zouzangte village -Police said the IRB personnel were coming back from election duty at Bishonpur.

Sources said the insurgents, hiding in thick hilly jungles, sprayed bullets from automatic weapons when the personnel of 1st and 4th India Reserve Battalion along with polling personnel reached a spot near Joujangtek, about 35 km south of here, at around 10 in the morning.

While 14 personnel were killed on the spot, seven others suffered injuries, the sources said.

The heavy exchange of fire between the security personnel and the insurgents lasted for over two hours, the sources said adding the insurgents fled with sophisticated weapons.

It was not immediately known whether any polling personnel were injured or polling materials including Electronic Voting machines were destroyed in the incident. A helicopter has been requisitioned to transport the bodies and injured personnel. Police and central security personnel reached the spot.
