A 55-year-old woman from Ganesh Nagar in Sirsi, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka dug a 45-foot well within the premises of the Anganwadi Centre to ensure a steady supply of water for the children. A woman named Gauri Nayka began this herculean task of digging a four-foot-wide well near her house a week ago. Each day, she dug a depth of one and a half feet with the help of basic tools like hoe, pickaxe, basket and rope, laboriously hauling tens of buckets of soil.
Witnessing the hard work of his mother, Vinay Nayka said that she used to go to work at 7.30 am daily and come back by noon. It was followed by her departure at 3 pm and arrival at 6 pm in the house after digging up the well.
Gauri Nayka was firm on her goal to complete the well within a month to ensure a reliable water source for the community. While explaining her motivation behind the initiative, Gauri Nayka told Local18 that water scarcity in Ganesh Nagar prompted her to take action. She began the drilling on January 30.
As per reports, the Anganwadi Centre in Ganesh Nagar shelters 15 children in the community. They provide essential care and early education to these children. The shortage of water posed a serious threat to the well-being of the children as the Hutgar gram panchayat used to supply water only once every day to the Anganwadi Centre.
This is not the first time that Gauri Nayka has dug a well though. The woman has already dug two wells in 2017 and 2018. “I dug up a well with a depth of 65 feet near my home to irrigate the areca nut crop. We were facing an acute shortage of water for my small farmland. Hence, I decided to dig up the well in three months and succeeded. I dug up another well of 40 feet depth in my farmland,” Gauri Nayka said while talking to the Hindustan Times reporters.
