Manmohan Singh forecasts economy will perform well again this year but asserts that growth must include all .

New Delhi: Acquiring land for industries has created "undesired consequences" and “those concerns have to be taken on board," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Lok Sabha on Thursday.

"We need to pursue a purposeful strategy so that the growth benefits every one," he said. The economy grew by about 8.3 per cent in the last three years and the figure is expected to reach nine per cent during 2006-07.

"This year the growth rate will probably exceed nine per cent," Singh said while replying to the marathon debate on the motion of thanks to the President's address.

"If we remain steadfast in this inclusive growth, we will be able to be make an impact on problems of poverty and unemployment," he said.

The UPA government has taken many steps in the last three years to reduce poverty. Investment rates have gone up by 34 per cent of GDP and the savings rate has risen to 32 per cent of GDP.

Inflation hurts

The Government is determined to curb inflation without harming the strong growth, he said. The Reserve Bank has taken measures to moderate prices, he said. "If inflation becomes a problem and brings agony and hardship to people, it has to be dealt with on priority basis," Singh said adding, "this is precisely" what is being done.

Pledging to improve the quality of governance, Singh said Government has taken seriously challenges of stagnation in agriculture.

Government will work steadfastly in addressing the problems facing agriculture.

Singh said it was necessary to increase production of foodgrain, vegetable oil and other essential commodities.

Singh asserted preventive steps taken by the government had ensured that there was no communal violence or breakdown of the law and order machinery in the wake of incidents such as Mumbai blasts or problems in Assam and the North-East.

On inter-state disputes over water, Singh appealed to all political parties to treat water as a "national resource" and not divide people.
