KOCHI: The preliminary work of the Kochi Metro Rail project will start on Friday with the GCDA handing over Manappattiparambu to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the agency entrusted with the construction work. It is for casting the girders for re-constructing the North Railway Overbridge (RoB) that the Manappattiparambu is being handed over to DMRC. The land will also be used by the DMRC to store the machines for construction.The construction of flyover on Salim Rajan Road will start soon. For facilitating the construction, the land owned by KSRTC near the Salim Rajan Road will be handed over to DMRC. District Collector P I Sheik Pareed said that the reconstruction of the North RoB would start with the demolition of the four-and-a-half metre wide side bridges. The central portion of the RoB will be pulled down only after completing the construction of the small bridges on either sides.City Police Commissioner Ajith Kumar has submitted the suggestions for traffic regulations in the wake of the construction work. It has been suggested that the byroads in the city should be repaired to divert traffic through them.Excise Minister K Babu will convene a meeting of all the parties concerned to discuss about the traffic regulations and rehabilitation of traders who will be evicted from under the RoB. DMRC project director P Sreeram has handed over the design of the metro rail to the District Collector. The first phase of the work will be completed within 18 months. It was in March that the state government sanctioned the funds for the preparatory work.To reconstruct the North RoB, Rs 80.50 crore will be required. The reconstruction of the North RoB will be held in seven phases.
