New Delhi: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has named Mahindra United defender Irungbam Surkumar Singh as the Player of the Year for 2006 on Wednesday.
Surkumar Singh put in impressive performances playing for India as well as his club during the year. His name was announced by the AIFF during its annual general meeting in the Capital.
Manipur's Surkumar Singh is the second footballer from the state to have got the honour. Tomba Singh was the first Manipuri to have bagged the honour in 2003.
Mahindra United has risen by leaps and bounds in stature in the Indian football circuit, which was earlier dominated by clubs from Bengal like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammadan Sporting, as well as Goa's Salgaocar.
Surkumar Singh in the heart of Mahindra's defence has been a revelation throughout the year.
Surkumar was also part of the Indian team at the Doha Asian Games and found the net in the match against the Maldives.
Climax Lawrence was adjudged Player of the Year in 2005.
