Assam will vote in two phases to elect a new 126-member Assembly. The voting will take place on April 4 and 11 but the results will be known only more than a month later on May 19.
The state has been under Congress rule for the last 15 years and its Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has powered the party to three electoral victories. But the Narendar Modi wave decimated the Congress in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and the party managed to win just three of the 14 parliamentary seats.
Three districts share the border with Bangladesh. They are Karimganj, Cachar and Dhubri. The Congress is contesting on 122 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 80, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) 25, Bodoland People's Front (BPF) 13 and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on 76.
Faced with a strong opposition, the Congress is fighting with its back to the wall.
Here are some interesting data from the poll-bound state:
- Total electorate in Assam: 1.99 crore

- Voters in Lower Assam: About 64 lakh
- Number Of constituencies in Upper Assam: 50
- Number Of constituencies in Lower Assam: 40
- Number Of constituencies in Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD): 16 seats
(Figures of Upper and Lower Assam are approximate as there is no official demarcation but BTAD is the official figure.)
