A ticket for an English film in a multiplex costs anything between Rs 200-300 on an average. And guess what, some theatres have decided to make extra buck on top of this.
The world wide re-release of Avatar this Friday didn’t generate enough moolah at the box office like it did when it released last year on December 10. And this time, the film is released only in 3D with additional 9 minute of footage.
And those who want to watch it will have to pay extra Rs 30 over and above the ticket price. They can carry these glasses home, but they are not given an option of returning the glasses for the refund of the money.
Maitreyee Dasgupta, who saw the film at PVR Phoenix, shares her bitter experience. “Firstly, they charge you an exorbitant price for the tickets and then they force the 3D glasses on you. It’s not optional and you are forced to pay Rs 30 for the 3D glass which is tacky and made of cardboard.”
When contacted PVR Phoenix, a spokesperson who didn’t wish to be named, confirmed that they have made it compulsory to buy the 3D glasses for Rs 30.
Generally for 3D films some theatres charge the viewer Rs 100, which is refunded when the glasses are returned. Or like in Big Cinemas they used to give it to you free, and take it back from you when you are exiting the theatre.
But for Avatar, Big Cinemas has also introduced the new rule where the audience have to buy the glasses for Rs 30. Cinemax theatres have also followed suit.
However, some theatres are still handing them out free and retrieving them once the movie gets over. Vikram Verma, senior marketing manager of Fun Republic says, “We are not charging extra for the 3D glasses. There might be other multiplexes doing that but we are not even taking any deposit.”
