BANGALORE: Hard work, they say, never goes unappreciated.Standing true to the words, people seem to be taking notice of the fact that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is finally understanding of the grievances of the ‘aam aadmi’ and acting to make the city a cleaner and a less reeking place. This time the place they have chosen for the same is Jayamahal Road. While Jayamahal Road seems to be constantly in the news for all the wrong reasons, this time, the spotlight is on it, for a change, because of the commendable work that the BBMP has undertaken. The desilting work on the drains has begun and while it brings with it several hassles for the pedestrians and motorists alike, the authorities concerned have ensured that the concerns are minimum for the people traversing through the area. The systematic approach adopted by them has left everyone surprised.Instead of discarding the slabs on the road, they have chosen to lay it on the alternate which will not be removed.Thereby, even though a walker has to play skipping stones, he/she need not get on the road and fight amidst the traffic. The waste removed from the drains has been made into small heaps. While this is an inconvenience, sources say that steps will be taken to clear it as soon as the work has been concluded. Also, to the BBMP’s credit, one has to add that the be it rain or sun, work seems to be progressing at a fast pace. With more than half of the expanse of the road completed, people are eagerly waiting for the remaining to finish. Rajesh, a commuter, said, “I wait regularly at the Jayamahal Bus Stop for my bus.Although the work is obtrusive, it doesn’t take a toll on commuters as the traffic inflow is not very high and people can still make their way through unscathed.” However, a major concern with the work is the fact that several stone slabs are very unstable and one does not know which might be perilous to step on.However Saroja, a pedestrian voiced her concerns.“This is a slight problem as a few of them are not placed properly. The waste also needs to be cleared off immediately. But otherwise, a very progressive move by the authorities.” The local corporator of the area is MK Gunashekhar. He said, “The work will take another fifteen to days to complete.”
