CHENNAI: The Union government is posing an obstacle to execution of the Rs 1,200 crore Kundah Pumped Storage Hydro Power Project, State Electricity Minister Natham R Viswanathan told the Assembly on Thursday. In his reply to the demand for grant to Energy Department, Viswanathan said the Kundah plan was taken up to resolve the power crisis in Tamil Nadu but the Centre had objected to the project by saying that it was an “inter-State issue.”Stating that the Kundah River was a branch of Cauvery’s tributary, which does not link other States, he said: “The Union government has said that Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry have to decide on this. Only Puducherry has given its nod” .Pointing out that the project had nothing to do with the Cauvery issue and would not impact the riparian States, the Minister said that the stance of the Centre that Tamil Nadu should take the permission of other States proved that it was the stumbling block on the issue. “Chief Minister Jayalalithaa would take continuous steps to get the Centre’s nod,” he said.
