City cops scotch attack rumours

The Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also pitched in with offers of help.Cyberabad police officials held a meeting at the National Academy of Construction (NAC) with representatives of people from the northeast and the security agencies that employ many of them. Stating that reports of local attacks on them were mere rumours, Madhapur deputy commissioner of police T Yoganand said the situation was under control and that people from the northeast had nothing to worry.“No Assamese people have been assaulted or threatened here,” he said. “In view of violence in Assam, a  lot of people from that state are going back to their native places to see their families out of anxiety.”He said pickets have been posted in Anjaiah Nagar and Siddique Nagar, where such rumours began, and patrolling has been intensified in Raidurg and Madhapur areas.’’Northeasterners who spoke at the NAC meeting said they have not been attacked or threatened in Hyderabad. “I was withdrawing money from an ATM when I overheard one person (an Assamese man) being asked what he was doing here. I left the place lest there be trouble,’’ said one person. A representative of an NGO said 13 out of the 20 students from the northeast studying at the NAC campus in Guntur have left for the native states in recent days. “I brought the remaining seven to the city but we have not had any trouble here,’’ he said.A delegation of northeasterners met City police commissioner Anurag Sharma and told him about their apprehensions.
