BANGALORE: If everything works out according to the plan, Lalbagh Botanical Garden, will soon get a facelift. A proposal has already been submitted to the government and the authorities are awaiting the final approval. Dr S Aswath, joint director, Horticulture Department (Parks and Garden), said, “Spread across a total area of 240 acres, there are still many patches in between the Lalbagh Garden, which are yet to be developed. A detailed developmental plan, at the cost of about Rs. 4.5 crore, has been proposed to the government. Once it is approved, we will begin with the work.”One of the major attraction of this project, medicinal plants, will be planted at the botanical garden. “The Dhanavantri vana area (towards RV Road) will be levelled and the 15-acre land will be used for medicinal plants,” he said. The new project proposes to build parking lot for the public. Speaking about this, he said, “Parking lot is a major concern, especially during the annual flower show. Keeping this in view, a portion of the garden, around 5-acres which lies vacant towards the Siddapura Gate will be developed into a parking area.” This apart, the area which needs to be developed is the lake. The lake set up in an area covering 2.10 acres has been yet another attraction of Lalbagh. Due to its dilapidated condition and the tank construction wearing off, all the fishes from the lake were taken back by the fisheries department. “We had sent the samples of the lake for testing to Civil Aid Techno clinic Private Limited and the Indian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). We have already received a feedback from them stating that we can go ahead with the restoration work. We are waiting for INTACH’s response. Once we get the approval from INTACH we will go forward with the restoration work” said Dr Aswath.
