THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s  assurance to create 163 posts in the Public Service Commission (PSC) would help to speed up publishing many ranklists which had been pending for a long time.It was during a meeting with PSC chairman K S Radhakrishnan and Chief Minister the other day that the latter assured to sanction the posts. It may be noted that the PSC had been   requesting the successive governments from a long time to sanction sufficient posts for the last 15 years. The recent stand-off between the government and the PSC over the latter’s reluctance to extend the tenure of over 485 ranklists till April 30, 2012, had become a hot subject of debate recently. The PSC’s climbdown from its earlier stand  turned out to be a relief for a large number of candidates who had their names in the ranklists and were on the verge of crossing the age limit fixed for government jobs. The Chief Minister had pointed out that the PSC should have released the fresh lists in time if it was reluctant to extend the tenure of the lists. However, the PSC had its own reasons for the delay in publishing many of the lists. The PSC chairman told Express that PSC is suffering huge staff shortage even when recruitment of so many Apex Co-operative Societies  and universities were entrusted with the PSC. “Moreover, Justice Narendran Commission’s recommendation to strictly follow the community quota (NCA notification) had added to the workload of the PSC by 10 times,” he said.“Issuing a notification for recruitment to any post, whether it be for five posts or 500 posts, is a long process that requires manpower and sufficient time,” he said. The online registration and the call centre facility which were started at the headquarters and above all the verification of certificates of those who had been appointed also added to the workload.Former PSC chairman K V Salahudeen also said that during his tenure too he had called for creating over 400 posts. But only 101 posts were sanctioned during the LDF Government’s tenure. The PSC Rankholders Association on the other day had complained that the PSC had not published the list for the LGS post during the last one year. The commission could release only a short list in the Palakkad district.“For the peon posts, the vacancies had not been filled for the last one year for want of list,” Biju B Pathenapuram, secretary, said. He pointed out that publishing the short list in other districts would require another six months. He also said that from January 1, 2012, the PSC had no list for LGS and LDC and surveyor posts. In this backdrop, if the rank lists are speedily published it would benefit those who had already crossed 35 years of age and have no chance to appear for another PSC exam. The assurance to create 163 posts would be helpful for the Commission to expedite its working.
