Ahmedabad: A lawyer, who is accused of duping hundreds of women through a small savings scheme, set himself on fire and sustained minor injuries at the premises of Gujarat High Court on Monday afternoon.
Kishore Agarwal, who had started a savings scheme for women, allegedly promised them that they would receive one lakh rupees each and also a house of their own. He floated a company called 'Noorie Parivar' and claimed to have three crore members.
On Monday afternoon, over 500 women who had paid Rs 50,000 each over the past four years, arrived at the High Court as he promised to repay them back.
However, Agarwal poured a little inflammable liquid over his neck and back and set himself on fire. He was taken to the Sola Civil hospital with minor burns. The women claim his attempt at suicide was only a stunt.
One of the victims Kokila Parmar said, "We paid Rs 50,000 and promised a house and one lakh rupees, but he did not give us a single rupee. He has been cheating us for four years".
Another investor Rekha Patni, who was duped, said, "His (Kishore) company's brochure had a photograph of Narendra Modi and we thought he is genuine. We believed him and gave him money. On Monday he called us all and tried to set himself on fire".
The matter is presently in the local court.
