TIRUNELVELI: Amid fears of construction work resuming at the Koodankulam plant, over 1,000 protestors laid siege to the nuclear power project site on Saturday.With the relay fast entering its 54th day at Idinthakarai, villagers from Chettikulam, Koodankulam, Vairavikinaru, Vijayapathi, Idinthakarai, Koothapuli and Perumalal converged at the plant to ensure that no worker slips past their cordon. However, traffic was not disrupted in the area. The protest continued till evening, when talks between officials and protestors were held at the Koodankulam Police station.Various demands, including the complete stoppage of work by implementing the Tamil Nadu Cabinet resolution to evacuate contract workers inside the plant and monitor workers going to the plant by fixing closed circuit television cameras at the entrance of  the plant were  raised. Meanwhile, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) claimed that it had not appointed any new worker with the aim of restarting activities at the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project .In a press release here on Saturday, Site Director M Kasinath Balaji said that at present, no construction work was going on.Denying reports that contract labourers had reached Koodankulam on Saturday to restart the work at the instruction of NPCIL, he said that it had not called in workers to restart the halted activities.
