KOCHI: The railway gate closure for the maintenance work at Pachalam has created confusion among travellers, however, the traffic police’s good work has curtailed the possibilities of traffic snarls in the city. The vehicles passing by the Pachalam gate to reach Kaloor and Edappally area, were diverted through the Vaduthala gate. One of the major problems with the Vaduthala gate is the sharp turn near it that blocks the traffic coming from one side. The buses and lorries find it hard to negotiate the turn. The junction closer to the gate added on to the problem too. But, the police effectively controlled the vehicle movement from both the sides to avoid any kind of bottlenecks here. The police were also deployed on the Kacheripady- Vaduthala stretch to direct the travellers towards the right route.According to circle inspector M M Stalin, the closure of the gate was proposed on December 29 but considering the New Year rush, the repair work was postponed till Monday. “The traffic is normal and people are being directed towards the Vaduthala railway crossing. The only problem is that vehicles have to take a big turn at the gate and it can block the road. However, more police were deployed here to avoid any kind of block,” Stalin added. The number of the vehicles passing through Pullepady area also increased following the traffic diversion and people travelling to Elamakkara and Manipattyparambu had to take Pullepady route. The toll collection at the Pullepady bridge added on to the traffic block and at the peak time vehicles were found queuing from the Chittoor road.Meanwhile, the Railway Engineering Department has informed that the work at Pachalam is being carried out in good pace and the work may be finished within two days. “The maintenance work is going on at a good speed. Considering the traffic problem following the closure of the Pachalam gate, more workers had been deployed for the work. The work would end within two days,” Railway official said.
