THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There was a flood of programmes in the city on Sunday to mark the World Environment Day. Various organisations, government departments and local bodies vied to pledge their love for Nature. One of them was ‘Maram Oru Thanal’ project, jointly launched by the VHSE National Service Scheme and Kerala Energy Conservation Forum. Transport Minister V S Sivakumar launched the project at Fort Government UP School. The project aims to plant one lakh saplings across the state through higher secondary students. In his address, Sivakumar emphasised the need for eco-friendly schools. The sapling should be taken care of, he said. Young Indians TrivandrumYoung Indians Trivandrum celebrated the World Environment Day by taking out a cycle rally. The theme of the event was ‘Cycle for Better Life Cycle’. The event was flagged off by Padmakumar, the zonal chair of CII(Confederation of Indian Industry). The members of Yi and family cycled from Kowdiar to Musuem Jn and back with the message of protecting environment and reducing the pollution effect. Young Indians is the youth forum of CII and has chapters across the nation working with a mission of being the ‘voice of the youth in India’. Its motto is ‘We Can We Will’. Child Welfare CouncilThe State Council for Child Welfare and National Museum of Natural History jointly organised a painting competition for students in the city. Children between the age of 5 and 15 gave wings to their imagination on eco-protection. The theme was ‘Forest for Nature conservation’. More than 2,000 students participated in the competition, which was held in four centres. Talks and seminars were held in the centres with the participation of experts in the field. WWF-IndiaThe WWF-India, Dept. of Museums & Zoos and the Thiruvananthapuram Chapter of Oisca organised a talk on green issues. The programme was inaugurated by Renjan Mathew Varghese, state director of WWF-India, in a function presided over by Dr K Udayavarman, Director of the Dept. of Museums & Zoos. Dr E Kunjikrishnan, noted environmentalist and professor at University College who delivered the key-note address, asked the students to keep the green thinking in mind and organise green activities round the year to protect Mother Nature through forests. The participants later visited the city zoo. Informative and attractive educational materials prepared by Zoo Outreach Organisation (ZOO), Coimbatore, were distributed. WWF-India will conduct a single-day forest education trip to Kallar forests by including three students each from various schools on June 8. A quiz competition will be conducted on June 9 on ‘nature and environment’ for high school students. Those who like to participate in the trip and quiz competition are requested to send a mail of interest to [email protected] on or before June 7. Sastra VediThe Sastra Vedi under the KPCC conducted Environment Day programmes across the state. The state-wide inauguration was done by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala at Indira Bhavan, where he planted saplings. A seminar organised by Sastra Vedi was inaugurated by Forest Minister K B Ganesh Kumar, who opined that science and man should go hand-in-hand. There should be efforts to prevent soil erosion and to protect canals and rivers, he said. COSTFORDUnder the auspices of COSTFORD, that preaches environment-friendly architecture, more than 30 saplings were planted at Karimadom Colony. The renovation of the colony is being done by COSTFORD on the basis of a design which was the last work of master architect Laurie Baker. Saplings of fruit-bearing trees like mango and jackfruit were given to family members of the colony who planted it on the compound. CDS former director K P Kannan and Deputy Mayor G Happykumar were also present.
