Metro is crucial for the development of Agra, and construction is progressing rapidly throughout the city. However, the ongoing work has become a significant issue for several families in Agra’s Moti Katra Taar Ki Gali.
The digging for the underground Metro tunnel has allegedly compromised the foundations of nearby homes, causing cracks and putting them at risk of collapse. Many families have been forced to seek shelter in hotels and motels, while those who chose to stay put live in constant fear.
The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) is laying Metro tracks throughout the city. Currently, six Metro stations are fully operational, while work continues on additional stations and underground tunnels. Digging is underway for a tunnel connecting Mankameshwar Station to SN Medical College and Agra College, with heavy machinery being used beneath Moti Katra Taar ki Gali.
The vibrations from this work have caused cracks in several homes. To address this, Metro engineers have provided iron rod support to help stabilize the structures. However, the residents remain fearful for their safety.
Rekha Yadav, a resident of Moti Katra Taar ki Gali, said, “I have been staying with my family in a motel for the past three to four days. The condition of our house is poor, with cracks appearing in many places of our three-story building. The underground digging for the Metro is the cause of these cracks.”
Jagdish Sharma, who lives across from the Yadavs, is facing the same issue. Both families are deeply concerned that their houses may collapse, leaving them homeless. Rekha Yadav said they have requested written assurance from the Metro officials promising to rebuild their homes if they collapse. However, the officials did not provide any such guarantee.
Now, the residents are hoping the government will take action to protect their homes.
