The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday set a four-week deadline for the State government to submit a report on Thursday’s fire accident at Om Sakthi Fireworks factory in Mudhalipatti, which left 38 dead and 55 others injured.
A notice in this regard was issued to the Chief Secretary after the NHRC received complaints from an NGO representative and a rights activist, alleging that the government failed to ensure adequate safety measures at factories in the region.
A case was registered on the basis of a media report forwarded by Anup Kumar Srivastava, the representative of an NGO, the NHRC said.
Another complaint, from rights activist R H Bansal, claimed that 54 persons have died in the fire accident.
Further, it has been claimed that while 90 per cent of the fireworks produced in the country were being manufactured in Sivakasi region, no adequate safety measures were ensured by the government, the NHRC said.
Apart from a detailed inquiry, the complainants have demanded adequate compensation to the victims and their families, the rights body detailed.
