CHENNAI: Former Tamil Nadu police chief Lethika Saran today challenged the June 1 order of the Central Administrative Tribunal, quashing a government decision to appoint her as the DGP.On June 1, Madras bench of CAT had quashed a November 27, 2010 government order, appointing Saran as the DGP and directed Chief Secretary-UPSC and Union of India to consider retired DGP R Nataraj's claim for appointment to the post with effect from that month as he was the senior-most and ranked top in the UPSC panel. The bench had stated this while disposing Nataraj's application, filed when he was the DGP (Director of Fire and Rescue Services), seeking to quash the G O.Letika Saran in her petition contended that the impugned order is ex-facie illegal and contrary to settled principle of law in the matter of selection to high posts and said her selection and appointment as the DGP is valid in law."The Tribunal erred in not appreciating that the selection of the petitioner was done in accordance with directions of the Supreme Court laid down in the Prakash Singh case and the direction of the Madras High Court," she said. She submitted that pursuant to the order, the government might make a fresh selection and appointment which would cause irreparable loss and hardship to her.Further such an order would lead to multiplicity of proceedings, she said and sought a stay on the order.
