New Delhi: Retired Army Chief and Bharatiya Janata Party candidate General VK Singh has attacked the Centre for appointing the Naval Chief during the general elections. He has described the decision as 'unethical'.
General Singh said, "The UPA's appointment of a new Naval Chief when it has just a month left in office is unethical. The choice of Admiral Dhowan is also puzzling. He was not the senior-most, he was about to retire himself and he has not held either the Western or the Eastern Naval Command. There are norms laid down for selection at every level in the Services and selecting him under these circumstances will have its own ramifications."
General Singh further says, "The UPA is playing with the Institutional Integrity of the Armed Forces. I am also told the government is likely to announce a new Army Chief. This will further the hurt our forces and the UPA Government has done enough damage to our National Security already. The Government's actions look malafide and it is ignoring crucial precedents and ethical issues. There are several ethical issues that need to be looked at objectively. The findings of the Jorhat court martial in itself justifies the DV ban. It also raises serious questions about the lifting of the DV ban which should have de-barred the officer in question from being appointed Army Commander, let alone the Army Chief. The current COAS and the government have tried to bury these grave issues and strangely the media has been silent on these issues. However, they must remember that these are grave matters and cannot be wished away, especially since all the sordid details are known to the rank and file. If this government continues to sweep these ethical, disciplinary and potentially criminal issues under the carpet in an attempt to foist its chosen one to the top position in the Army, it will be perpetrating a gigantic fraud on our brave men and women in uniform and the entire nation."
