Jharkhand government on Monday clarified that the replaced director of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Tulsi Mahto, did not inform the department after completing 60 years of age that bars holding the post.

"According to rules, the eligible age for appointment of director is below 60 years, and when Dr Mahto was below 60 he was appointed to the post. But he did not inform the health department after completing the age limit," an official release quoting Jharkhand Principal secretary (Health) BK Tripathy said in Ranchi.

"The department handed over the charge to another person (Dr SK Choudhary) after learning about it," he added. Stating that a petition relating the age matter is pending before the Jharkhand High Court, Tripathy said there should not be any apprehension about appointment as per rules.

Tripathy said the department was committed to working in an organised way with transparency and adhering to rules drawn for the RIMS. When contacted, Dr Mahto declined to speak.
