Govt, IOC wake upto oil mafia threat
After Manjunath's murder, IOC authorities have come out in the open to say that their officers' lives are perennially at risk.

New Delhi: The oil mafia seems to be ruling the roost in the country. After sales officer Manjunath's murder, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) authorities have come out in the open to say that their officers' lives are perennially at risk.

Director Marketing IOC, N G Kannan says, "Threatening calls have become a regular affair in IOC now. We even received an abduction call from Bihar recently. The company is now looking at ways to tackle the menace."

"Till last week, the IOC Chairman and Minister Oil and Natural Gas, Manishankar Aiyar, were saying that Manjunath's death was a one off incident but even they have done a rethink now," he adds.

IOC, where Manjunath was working, is accepting the fact that there are others who face a constant threat to their life in the line of duty.

Chairman, IOC, S Behuria says that the company has decided to hire private guards to ensure the security of their officers.

The top brass of the company admits that Manjunath's murder has affected the morale of other officers working in similar conditions.

Behuria said that till September 2005, company officials had received nearly 20 threatening calls.

Despite these warning signals, it took a Manjunath for the authorities to decide that security of the officers is a prime concern.
