New Delhi: The Indian government has offered celebrated painter Maqbool Fida Husain's family the option of bringing his body back to India for last rituals. It remains to be seen as to where his family decides to bury him.
The 95-year-old artist died on Thursday at Royal Brompton Hospital in London.
Husain had been living in a self-imposed exile since 2006 after right-wing groups threatened him over his paintings of Hindu deities. In January, 2010, he was offered the citizenship of Qatar, which he accepted.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Patil joined political leaders, artists, intellectuals and Bollywood actors in condoling Husain's death.
While the Prime Minister called his death a national loss, others in the art industry were shocked by the news of Husain's death.
Actress Shabana Azmi said that not enough was done to bring MF Husain back to the country.
