KARWAR: Gunavante, a village in Honnavar taluk shot to national fame with the late Shivaram Hegde and his son late Shambhu Hegde, both Yakshagana exponents, receiving the National Sangeeta and Natya Academy awards for their outstanding contributions to the art forms. This village is all set to organise the National Drama Festival later this month.Shambhu Hegde’s son Shivanand Hegde, director of Idagunji Yakshagana Mandali and Keremane, has been organising the festival under the aegis of the Mandali (troupe). The five-day festival beginning on January 21, will showcase the dance forms of the state and also of Orissa, Rajasthan and Kerala,Shivanand Hegde said in a statement. The inaugural day will be marked with an award presentation ceremony. Noted writer U R Ananthamurthy will be conferred the Keremane Shivaram Hegde Award-2011 on the occasion. K V Akshar of Heggodu Neenasam will speak on the award and the awardee; Minister for Kannada and Culture Govind Karjol will inaugurate the festival. District Minister and Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri will preside over the inaugural function.Besides Yakshagana, the major dance forms which will be presented at the festival include Kathak by Anurag Verma of Rajasthan; Mayur Banz Chavu dance by Shashidhar Acharya, Orissa on January 21; Gotipuva dance by Konark Natya Mantapa Orissa on January 22; puppet show by Gopalakrishna Yakshagana Bombe Aata Sangh, Kasaragode, Kerala on January 23; Yakshagana rendition by a women’s troupe Srimata Mahila Trust of Shimoga on January 24; and Laya Lavanya, a cultural programme by Anur Anantkrishna Sharma and his troupe on January 25. Folk dances like Dollu Kunita will also be showcased at the festival. Hindustani music renditions by Pt Parameshwar Hegde on January 22 and by Dhananjay Hegde from Mumbai on January 25 are the other attractions of the festival. Chairman of State Human Rights Commission S R Nayak, president of State Yakshagana Academy M L Shamag, Hostot Manjunath Bhagwat, an exponent of Yakshagana, and Prasannanath Swami of Adichunchanagiri Mutt would attend the festival, Hegde said.
