New Delhi: Several regions of India are battling drought and many farmers have reportedly committed suicide after their crops failed. But instead of expressing sympathy with the distressed people, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu has mocked those facing drought saying if gods wish, there will be rain which will bring relief for the farmers.
"Is drought in our hands? It will rain when god wishes. If it rains it is good, otherwise we will do what we have to. The state recommends compensation and we release funds, it is a continuous process," said Naidu.
The opposition has been quick to pounce on Naidu. Reacting to his statement, Congress spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said, "There are too many acts of god happening. Yes, it is weather-dependent and it has a natural buoyancy of a situation and climatic changes. Be what it may, but relief is something the government can deliver. And the Supreme Court in its wisdom, has pulled up this government."
He said his party will appeal to the Karnataka government to take all possible steps to ensure that people don't suffer. "We will appeal to the government of Karnataka to take any step possible to ensure that people don't suffer. That is the kind of initiative you take, we will not leave it to god," he said taking a dig at Naidu.
"Relief can be delivered on earth by the forces that rule the country. There is provision in the government budgets, for funds they have, they can divert a lot of money and give it to all the affected states instead of naming god for all this," he added.
The Supreme Court had on Wednesday slammed Centre on inaction in drought-hit areas. The court said nine states are facing drought and the government cannot turn blind eye on this. The petition on drought and government's alleged apathy was filed by Swaraj Abhiyan seeking extra effort and free food for the poor in the affected states.
The Bombay High Court, too, is hearing a plea over wastage of water during IPL matches even as many districts of Maharashtra face drought.
