J&K: Geelani for right to self-determination
Separatist leader of the hardline Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, refuses to be cowed down.

New Delhi: He raised a storm when after anti-national, pro-militant and pro-Pakistan slogans were shouted at his rally in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) last month.

Just a few days later his associates were arrested of midway during a press conference.

However, separatist leader of the hardline Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, refuses to be cowed down.

On Wednesday, he reiterated that he would not surrender his basic stand on Kashmir and would continue peaceful political struggle for right of self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

"We will not be cowed down by hooliganism and will never compromise on our basic stand.Till right of self determination is achieved the struggle will continue," a statement issued after a meeting of Majlis-e-Shoora (supreme advisory council) was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

The meeting which was presided over by Geelani discussed the situation arising out of arrest of Hurriyat leaders.

Four leaders of the amalgam were arrested from a local hotel while they were addressing a news conference and sent to Kotbalwal jail in Jammu under Public Safety Act on April 26.

Before that, a rally by Geelani had come under scanner after it was alleged that Lashkar-e-Toiba and Hizbul Mujahideen militants had participated in it and displayed their flags.

Geelani had returned to the Valley after a renal surgery in Mumbai and was greeted by thousands of supporters who reportedly waved Islamic flags and shouted pro-freedom slogans.

At the meeting Geelani said his party would settle for nothing less than complete freedom from India. It was Hurriyat hardliner's first public meeting this year in downtown Srinagar.
