HYDERABAD: A year after the Kiran Kumar Reddy government promised it, a joint legislature committee (JLC) will finally be set up to probe land allotments made to various special economic zones in the state.Though speaker N Manohar did constitute an Assembly committee on the matter a few days before the budget session began on Feb. 13, the TDP objected to it on two counts: one, the speaker had not consulted the TDP president before nominating two members of the party to the panel; and second, as the second largest party in the Assembly, the TDP was entitled to have more than two members in it. In protest, the TDP boycotted the Business Advisory Committee of the Assembly on Feb. 13. With the Legislative Council chairman A Chakrapani desiring in the meantime that the probe be a joint one by the Council and Assembly, the government decided to go in for a JLC examination of the contested land allocations.Government whip Dronamraju Srinivas moved a resolution to this effect in the Assembly on Wednesday, and it was adopted by a voice vote. The terms of reference of the JLC will be decided later in consultation with the participating parties.Sources said the committee will be headed by a ruling Congress MLA and have 12-15 members drawn from the two Houses of Legislature. The TDP has demanded fair representation for it in proportion to its strength in the Assembly. The modalities of the probe and the time frame for its report will be decided in due course by the speaker in consultation with the floor leaders of parties.
