New Delhi: Delhi Police have filed a case of sedition against students of Delhi's JNU for raising anti-national slogans at an event against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

The FIR under section-124-A (sedition) of IPC against unknown people on Thursday

Sources said police have got a video recording of 'provocative' and 'anti national' slogans and speeches that were made by a section of Jawharlal Nehru University students.

Earlier in the day, the JNU administration ordered an inquiry into how the event was held on Tuesday despite cancellation of permission.

The university's move came after protests by members of ABVP outside the VC office demanding expulsion of students who "misled" the university about the nature of the event.

Maintaining that the act by students amounted to "indiscipline", university authorities said a committee headed by the chief proctor will investigate the matter.

"The permission for the programme was sought by giving incomplete information, so it is an act of indiscipline," JNU Vice Chancellor Jagdeesh Kumar said.

Registrar Bhupinder Zutshi pointed out that nowhere in the permission request was it mentioned that the event would be on Afzal Guru.

"How can any talk about disintegration of nation be national?" he asked.

Student organisers of the event had pasted posters across the campus inviting them to gather for a protest march against "judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt".

Members of the ABVP wrote to the Vice Chancellor saying such marches might "disrupt" peace on campus. But even after the permission was cancelled, the students went ahead with a cultural programme and photo exhibition.

ABVP students then held protests demanding the expulsion of students who took part in the "anti-national activity."

The JNU students union "disowned" the controversy saying it was an attempt by ABVP to curb the "democratic traditions" of the university.
