Kamala Hassan defended actor Kushboo saying that Indian women should have more freedom in their lifestyles.

New York: On Wednesday Kamala Haasan joined the debate on Tamil women and premarital sex, which was kicked off by actor Kushboo.

Kamala Hassan said, "Indian women in general should have more freedom in their lifestyles and greater awareness of AIDS."

He added that Tamil society needs to be more open-minded.

Hassan is in New York shooting for a Tamil film, titled Vettaiyadu Velayadu (Dangerous Business) that revolves around the chastity of Tamil women.

"I really don't believe women should be curtailed. They should have more freedom and a broader outlook. Indira Gandhi was a widow but she still became the Prime Minister of India."

He however added that a broader outlook should also be a responsible outlook.

"All of us should practice safe sex. Sex is a personal decision but safe sex to ward off diseases like AIDS is essential," he said.
