Kolkata: Police on Friday detained Ratna Chatterjee, the estranged wife of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayor Sovan Chatterjee after he lodged a complaint saying she forcibly tried to enter his flat in Golpark area of South Kolkata.

Sovan and his wife had filed for divorce over some personal issues and for the last six months Sovan has been staying alone in his Golpark flat ‘Fort Legend’.

He has now lodged a complaint against his wife of trying to disturb his peace as he is suffering from various health issues, including diabetes and hypertension.

Trouble started once when Ratna alleged that Sovan is intentionally delaying the signing of visa papers for their daughter to go Germany for academic purposes. On Thursday, she held a night-long demonstration in front of his flat.

A team of police officers from Rabindra Sarovar police station rushed to convince Ratna to stop her agitation. However, she refused and said that she will only leave without the mayor signing the documents.

“I was forced to take the step because as my daughter’s education is at stake. He is not signing the documents required for my daughter’s higher studies,” Ratna said.

On Friday morning, suddenly a large number of Sovan’s supporters gathered at the spot and raised slogans against Ratna for her act. Soon, police officers detained Ratna under Section 148/1497341/506 of IPC.

“She was detained over a complaint by the Mayor. There is a court’s order which restricts illegal gathering outside the Mayor’s residence,” a senior police officer said.

Ratna’s lawyer, Subhasish Dasgupta said, “It was not an illegal gathering as the night-long demonstration held by Ratna was outside the premises of the Mayor’s residence. She didn’t entered the premises.”

Sovan is facing a CBI and Enforcement Directorate probe in an alleged money laundering case after the Narada sting. Ratna's financial assets are also under the scanner in the same case.

On April 17, CBI had filed a chargesheet against 13 Trinamool Congress leaders, including Sovan Mayor Chatterjee in the Narada sting case. All of them were booked under Section 120 B of IPC (criminal conspiracy), Section 13 (2), 13 (1D) and Section of 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act.

On May 11, Sovan told the Alipore Court during a hearing that he will not change his decision of divorcing Ratna.

In November 2017, Sovan filed for divorce after Ratna returned from the UK and questioned his sources of income. Since then, Sovan and Ratna have developed differences and are now fighting for divorce.
