Lakes break barriers, flood Chennai homes
Lakes break barriers, flood Chennai homes
Hardly a week after heavy rains turned life in Chennai upside down, the city finds itself in deep water again.

Chennai: The heavy downpour in Chennai has reduced to a slight drizzle. But people are now scared of a new enemy- lakes.

Lakes, bone-dry till now, have broken walls and entered people's homes.

A whole wall of the Angannur tank in Tiruvalluvar Nagar collapsed under heavy rain this morning, bursting into nearby homes and flooding roads. Yet strangely, the residents are glad the wall fell.

Says Shekar, a resident of Tiruvalluvar Nagar says, "If this wall hadn't collapsed, we'd have all died. Then who'd have come to our rescue? At least now it's flowing somewhere else..."

Somewhere else, is the already full Ambattur lake 20 kms from Chennai city. It is only a matter of a few hours of rain, before the lake spills into the industrial estate and homes nearby.

The Corporation Commissioner says Ambattur lake is not under his jurisdiction and holds Metrowater responsible.

Metrowater blames miscreants for weakening the lake walls. In the middle of the blame-game, if some department doesn't act, Chennai outskirts could soon be in deep water.
