New Delhi: The Left wants to celebrate the 1857 war of independence on the cricket pitch with India, Pakistan and Bangladesh taking on the empire.

The battlegrounds are going to be the theatres of the 1857 revolution. Dhaka, Kolkata and Lahore the best and most valorous of united India on display in the first war of independence.

And in its 150th year the CPI-M wants the guns and cannons to be replaced with cricket bats and leather balls – a Lagaan the united cricketing might of India and Pakistan and Bangladesh taking on what’s left of the British empire.

CPI-M leader, Sitaram Yechury says, “Cricket is one common factor between these countries, which actually runs through the emotions of the people. And on an occasion when we take on our former colonial power that will give us the basis for the three country’s teams to comes together. "

Even BCCI chief Sharad Pawar realises that it could be a casting coup of sorts with maybe Sachin Tendulkar playing the heroic Bhuvan taking on Andrew Flintoff's British Army ably supported by Harbajan Singh as the wily Kachda and maybe the rebellious Younis Khan as the villain turned friend Lakha.

So Pawar will now speak to the cricket boards of Pakistan and Bangladesh. If all goes as envisaged then it will be a dream come true for those cricket fans who wondered how formidable our cricket team would have been if the games greats in Pakistan played alongside Sachin. Rahul and Kumble.

But the CPI-M's wish list also has the beleaguered Saurav Ganguly and say its only fit that dada do an encore of what he did at lords six years back.

What's your reaction?
