THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: December 31 was the deadline the City Police Commissioner had set for the police stations in the city to compile a list of migrant labourers residing/working in their limits. But this task is unlikely to be completed in time as most of the police stations are yet to update the obsolete lists they had furnished long ago. Police had been collecting the number of other state labourers operating in their areas, but it was after the special squad had busted an inter-state burglary gang operated by Bengalis that the City Police Commissioner issued a circular asking all the stations to collect the latest list of the migrant labourers.Speaking to Express, City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said that the process of collecting the details of other state workers was in progress. ”Individual stations have registers where the names and details of people from other state are entered. Those need to be updated. Individual stations also have obtained the fingerprints and copies of identity cards of the labourers. But centralised storage of these data demands time and resources. We haven’t thought of centralised storage,” he said. Storing the individual documents of migrant labourers holds the key to fighting the inter- state criminal gangs reportedly thriving in the state.A Bengal-based gang had burgled more than 400 sovereigns of gold from the state. Police are working on the case by matching the fingerprints of the arrested with those obtained from various other places where similar thefts had occurred. It was in the light of these developments that the police decided to update the register of the migrant labourers. But the data collection is going at a snail’s pace and the anomalies in the furnished lists have marred the intentions of the police administration to prepare a flawless report. Peroorkada CI V Jayachandran admitted: ”We only have the statistics of the daily labourers. We don’t go in for the details of those who are employed in office duties and tourists. Updating is seldom done, so that those who have left the place are still included in the list,” he said. The list with the Vattiyoorkavu police has 150 names, while the Peroorkada police have the details of 137 names. Taking into consideration the booming construction business in the state, this list is considered illogical. Medical College CI A Pramod Kumar said that submitting the detailed list of the migrant labourers was not likely to occur before the deadline. ”We have asked the lodge owners to submit the details of the tourists. Registration of labourers who are working in various firms are being done through their contractors. It is a big procedure and requires more time,” he said. Surprisingly, the Thumba station, which falls under his jurisdiction, has got the maximum number of migrant labourers, estimated to be around 18,000.
