VELLORE: The pivotal role played by the private sector to promote higher education and the need for more liberalisation in the educational sector was emphasised at the recently held Education Promotion Society of India (EPSI) conference in Mumbai. The purpose of the conference is to bridge government agencies with education sector and frame a policy for increased contribution by private sector to education.The meet was attended by a cross section of academicians, policy-makers, heads of universities and other educational institutions. The conference in Mumbai was held in association with the Consortium of Management Education (COME) and was the third in the series of national conferences on this topic after Delhi and Chennai.G Viswanathan, chancellor of VIT university, who is also president of EPSI, pointed out that the current Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of students pursuing higher education in India stands at 12-15 per cent, and is projected to increase to 30 per cent by 2020 with the introduction of the new educational policy. He said the private sector needs to help the government accomplish this target.
