Modi govt grants citizenship to over 4,300 Hindu, Sikh refugees in one year
The BJP manifesto during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections had outlined that the party would welcome Hindi refugees back to India, in a bid to project India as the 'natural home' for Hindus.

The Narendra Modi government has claimed to have granted citizenship to at least 4,300 Hindu and Sikh refugees, who came from neighbouring Pakistan and Afghanistan, in the last one year.

The manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections had outlined that the party would welcome Hindi refugees back to India if voted to power at the Centre.

According to the BJP, it wants to project India as the 'natural home' for Hindus.

Notably, the previous UPA government at the Centre had granted citizenship to at least 1,000 refugees. The numbers projected by the NDA government is almost four times that of the UPA-II government.
